Five years ago, Pelsbarn was inspired by one very special dog.
Before there was our community of dog lovers, before thousands of products found their way into homes around the world, and before we started donating to shelters, there was Maya.
She showed us that one dog can change everything.
How It All Started
Sometimes, the smallest moments change your life forever. For us, it was a Facebook post from a local shelter featuring a dog waiting for someone to give them a second chance.
A visit to the shelter was very quickly arranged, initially with the idea of learning more about volunteering. At the time, we could never have imagined that this single visit would mean coming home with a new furbaby, and become the beginning of a journey that would inspire an entire brand dedicated to something even bigger.
The Little ‘Underdog”
When we arrived, Maya was waiting quietly in the background while all the other dogs happily bounced over to say hi. Maya was different, she was a little reserved and super shy, wagging her tail from a distance.
We were told she was the little underdog of the shelter. She was shy, quiet, and often picked on by the other dogs. When she retreated back into her little dog house, we knew we couldn't give up that easily, there was something so very special about her.
So, we sat with her. We gave her all the time she needed, plenty of gentle cuddles, soft pats, and lots of patience. Little by little, her confidence began to grow. Then, she finally stepped out to say hello, and in that moment, her future pawrents completely fell in love.
Before making things official, Maya came home for a trial weekend. She was calm, gentle and the sweetest pup you could ever imagine. She settled into family life as though she'd always belonged there. By the end of the weekend, on March 1, 2021, there was absolutely no turning back - Maya officially became part of the family.
Learning to Trust Again
Although Maya had found her forever home, her journey was only just beginning. Like most rescues, she was a little unsure of herself as she was adapting to her new home. Over time, life became so different for Maya.
She travelled with her new pawrents, exploring new places and meeting hundreds of friendly dogs and kind humans along the way. Each positive experience helped her realise that the world wasn't such a scary place after all, and little by little, her confidence began to grow.
Watching a shy, timid dog blossom into one that's happy, confident, and full of life is something that's hard to put into words. It's one of the most rewarding experiences a dog parent can have, and a beautiful reminder of what patience, love, and a second chance can do.

Maya didn't just find a family, she inspired a mission.
Meeting her opened our eyes to the incredible work shelters do every single day and the thousands of dogs still waiting for someone to see what we saw in Maya. She became the inspiration for Pelsbarn.
Every product we create has one purpose: to make dogs' lives as comfortable as they can be, while giving back to shelter dogs around the world.
Thanks to our community, we've been able to donate beds, blankets, cooling mats, harnesses, and other essentials to shelters around the world, helping hundreds of dogs along the way. Every purchase you've made has helped us continue supporting shelters and giving more rescue dogs the comfort, care, and hope they deserve.
None of it would have happened without one gentle and sweet little soul waiting quietly in the corner of a kennel.
As we celebrate Pelsbarn's fifth anniversary, it reminds us that every journey has a beginning. Ours began with Maya. Thank you Maya, for showing us what love, patience, and second chances can do.
